Science North gets funding for upgrades, retrofits and new exhibits

Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries Lisa MacLeod travelled to Manitoulin Island and Sudbury to not only talk to local tourist operators, but also to make a major announcement for Science North.

She says the Ontario government is investing more than $8.9 million in Science North to support the 2021-22 operations, develop exhibits and online content, perform maintenance and repairs, and deliver learning supports for students and teachers.

MacLeod adds the investment will help sustain operations, protect jobs, and support short and long-term recovery planning following the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While $6.8 million will go towards operating and admin costs, the rest will be used to upgrade programming space, habitats and exhibits, science summer camps for children and to create videos supporting education programs for students.

Another $150,000 has been set aside to develop and promote Honouring Indigenous Ingenuity, a travelling exhibit with events and programming that will highlight the innovations and history of Canada’s Indigenous culture through the lens of science and technology.
