Local artist featured in popular children’s magazine

Michael Cywink Senior is a well-known artist throughout the local area and you can now find his work in a special magazine.

To mark National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day in June, publishers Owlkids, 4Canoes, and GoodMinds.com released The Ojibwe of Great Spirit Island: Celebrating Indigenous Culture Together, a magazine for kids now available everywhere.

Cywink, a band member of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island, has been painting since he was nine years old.

Publisher Angela Keenlyside says he was the perfect choice to feature Indigenous art with his past expertise as the art coordinator for the Wiikwemkoong Art Gallery, curator for the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation in M’Chigeeng, Manitoulin, as well as a First Nations cultural consultant with Walt Disney Imagineering/Disney’s America theme park in California.
