Local First Nations began Canada Day with a Sunrise Ceremony and Sacred Fires honouring the children found in graves on residential school properties.
Serpent River First Nation hosted a traffic information slowdown on Highway 17 yesterday to share information about the children and the Truth and Reconciliation Calls for Action.
In Whitefish River First Nation, community members gathered along Highway Six to highlight the Every Child Matters platform and to honour the children found in unmarked graves at residential schools with placards stating We Are Still Here.
Meanwhile, the number of found unmarked graves continues to rise.
182 more burial sites were found on Wednesday.
The Lower Kootenay Band states in a news release that it began using the technology last year to search the site close to the former St. Eugene’s Mission School near Cranbrook, British Columbia which was operated by the Catholic Church from 1912 until the early 1970s.
