The tourism industry in Northern Ontario is calling on the Canadian Government to ramp up plans to reopen the Canada/US border immediately to save the tourism sector as it nears total collapse.
Destination Northern Ontario spokesperson David MacLachlan says the industry has been particularly hard-hit because of the pandemic especially in Northern Ontario.
MacLachlan says the effect Americans have on the northern economy is beneficial or catastrophic depending on circumstances, such as the pandemic.
He adds access, distance and price point all have a huge effect on anglers, hunters and tourists coming to the North, so having the border reopen before June 22nd would have a profound positive effect on businesses, both large and small.
As part of Nature and Outdoor Tourism Ontario, he and members are calling on the federal government to allow the borders to open a lot faster so they do not lose half their summer season.
