Changing up Canada Day this year

Municipal leaders are calling for a subdued respectful Canada Day including Espanola Mayor Jill Beer.

Mayor Beer says respect should be accorded to First Nation Indigenous Peoples this Canada Day.

Beer says the Town of Espanola extends its deepest respect to Anishinabek neighbours and First Nation and Métis members of the community as well as challenges everyone on thinking of what it means to be Canadian this July 1st.

She asks people to take time to reflect on the history of colonialism in Canada and the events in history that have, and continue to have very traumatic impacts on Indigenous Peoples.

Beer says Canada Day presents everyone with an opportunity to emphasize the importance of diversity and inclusion while further educating themselves on history, truth and reconciliation.
