Agreement signed between Anishinabek Grand Council and Canadian Government

The Anishinabek Grand Council and the Canadian Government have signed an agreement-in-principle focusing on Anishinabek youth.

The document was signed by Anishinabek Grand Council Chief Reginald Niganobe, on behalf of 22 member First Nations as well as the Anishinabek Nation, along with federal officials.

The Agreement-in-Principle supports the signatory First Nations in creating their own system and delivering the programs and services required to keep Anishinabek children within Anishinabek families and communities.

Signatory First Nations will continue to develop and deliver the programs and services they determine are needed to support Anishinabek families’ well-being.

Niganobe says the Anishinabek Nation is encouraged by this signing saying keeping their children within their communities surrounded by family, community, and culture is what’s best for them.

Bennett adds the agreement-in-principle is a major step on the road to self-determination and a better future for Anishinabek communities and will support the Anishinabek Nation’s ongoing work with the member First Nations to advance their own child well-being system.
