Elliot Lake Fire Department responds to apartment fire

The Elliot Lake Fire Department responds to a fire at an apartment building on Monday night.

Fire Chief John Thomas says at around 7 pm on Monday evening, the department was called out to a fire at 147 Mississauga Avenue.
He says upon arrival on the scene the fire department crew reported smoke and flames coming from an apartment window.

Firefighters rescued one occupant who was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for smoke inhalation.

He adds the crews quickly knocked down the fire and damage was contained to one unit with damage estimated at around $125,000.
Due to the injuries of the occupant, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was notified and will be conducting the investigation into the cause of the fire, adds Thomas.
Thomas says he would also like to remind the public that every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every story and outside all sleeping areas.
