HSN and paramedics step up to support Ontario’s ICU demand

Health Sciences North is working with partners across Northeastern Ontario to support

the province’s critical care demand.

COVID-19 patients are being transported by land ambulances from Southern Ontario hospitals who are in need of critical care.

Hospital Senior Vice President Mark Hartman says COVID-19 admissions to Intensive Care Units remain high as hospitals throughout much of Southern Ontario are bursting at the seams.

Hartman adds as of May 5, the hospital and City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services have transported a total of six COVID-19 patients from hospitals in Southern Ontario to HSN and more transfers are expected in the coming weeks.

He says by working together, the two can transport up to two patients per day, if necessary and the hospital could accept anywhere from five to eight COVID-19 patients per week from other parts of the province, should this be required.
