An alert has gone out on phones across Northern Ontario at around 12:45 pm today, Saturday, alerting the public to a serious situation on Manitoulin Island.
The Manitoulin OPP alert states personnel are currently involved in an ongoing investigation in M’Chigeeng First Nation, which is the central part of Manitoulin Island.
The alert states police are dealing with an armed and dangerous situation in the community.
The OPP is advising everyone to avoid the area and for those living in the community to seek shelter and not go outside.

The public is also asked to stay off the main highways, especially Highways 540 and 551, which both run through the community.
