Northern Ontario School of Medicine severed from LU

Minister of Colleges and Universities Ross Romano has announced the Northern Ontario School of Medicine is being severed from Laurentian and Lakehead universities.

On Friday, Romano announced school would no longer be able to offer degrees as part of Lakehead or Laurentian University and would instead become a fully autonomous degree-granting institution.

Working with and granting degrees from both Lakehead and Laurentian universities, the school ensured students enrolled at either institution could attain a medical education and receive a degree from an Ontario university.

In reaction, the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations and the Canadian Union of Public Employees have now called for Romano’s resignation.

Laurentian University and University of Sudbury have signed an interim agreement.

According to the press release, the deal outlines terms to be implemented by the parties as part of Laurentian’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act process with an effective date of May 1st.

The parties agreed to specific terms enabling Laurentian to teach six Indigenous Studies courses during the Spring Term, as per the recommendation of the Laurentian University Native Education Council resolution passed on April 12th.

These courses had previously been taught by the University of Sudbury.
