Federal politicians weigh in on Laurentian University

Although not a federal matter, Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes is weighing in on the restructuring of Laurentian University after it was announced Monday that over 80 staff and 69 programs are being cut.

She is joined by fellow NDP MP Charlie Angus in condemning the cuts, stating the shocking dismemberment of Laurentian University’s programs and staff is a devastating blow to the people of Northern Ontario and Canada.

They are calling on the Federal Liberals to work with northern leaders to address this crisis, especially in light of the potential negative economic impacts.

Hughes points out the loss to the francophone community of the north will be immense with the loss of the French Studies department.

Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas also criticized the cuts and the process at Queen’s Park.

She says Doug Ford needs to take immediate action and provide Laurentian with the funds it needs to stop the layoffs and cancellation of programs.
