Laurentian University terminates federation agreements with universities – protest rally today in Sudbury

There has been an outcry with Laurentian University officially terminating its federation agreements with three other universities: Huntington, Thorneloe, and the University of Sudbury.

Last week, Laurentian President Robert Haché announced the move is part of the restructuring plans for Laurentian, which was declared insolvent in February.

Haché adds the termination of the agreements comes into effect on May 1st.

He adds each of the federated universities will continue to own and operate their own buildings and facilities.

Huntington and the University of Sudbury have already announced the cancellation of all spring classes.

Haché says the target date for completion of the key components of its financial restructuring plan is April 30.

More information is available at laurentianu.info.

Still with the story, the Save Sudbury group advocating for Laurentian to save the universities will host a rally in downtown Sudbury this morning starting at 10:00 am.

The lockdown compliant gathering will begin in the Parking Lot of the Sudbury Theatre Centre, 170 Shaughnessy St., (next door to the Multicultural and Folk Arts Centre Building).

SOS is demanding that President Haché keep the university federation intact, end the CCAA process, and call on Colleges and Universities Minister Ross Romano to immediately fund Laurentian University.

Due to the provincial lockdown, small groups will be given staggered start times, and will march to the Bridge of Nations (Paris St.). All participants in the rally have been instructed that compliant masks or face coverings are mandatory.
