Gélinas, MPP for Nickel Belt calls on province to declare hot spot
Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas called on Premier Doug Ford to help residents by declaring Sudbury and District Public Health area a hot spot for COVID-19.
She made the call at Queen’s Park yesterday saying the week has been difficult with dozens of new cases and thousands of people booking vaccine appointments.
Gélinas says Sudbury and districts have been in a grey zone lockdown since March 12th with multiple outbreaks and more concerning, that 48% of the active cases are variants of concerns.
She is critical that the Ford government has not been clear as to who can be vaccinated and if Sudbury is declared a hot zone, there will be a focus on getting as many needles into arms in the local districts as possible.
A look at local numbers … huge jump in Sudbury again
Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reporting another big jump in active cases with 41 new cases yesterday.
Thirty-seven are in Greater Sudbury while four others are in the Sudbury District.
Considering resolved cases, there are 316 active cases within the agency’s jurisdiction.
Health Sciences North is reporting they have 36 admitted patients of which 19 are confirmed cases and test results are being sought for the rest.
The hospital is also reporting eight patients are in intensive care.
Algoma Public Health has had a slight decrease from 20 to 18 cases with no individuals in hospital.
COVID outbreak declared at Southwind Retirement Residence in Sudbury
Public Health Sudbury & Districts declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Chartwell Southwind Retirement Residence Tuesday after a staff member tested positive.
Health unit director Stacey Laforest says the agency is actively working with the retirement home to investigate the outbreak and to protect residents and staff.
She says there is a need for everyone to monitor and screen for COVID-19 symptoms daily and to stay home when ill is critical in limiting the spread of the virus.
The agency also announced the outbreak at Walden Public School over, but all students throughout the Manitoulin and Sudbury districts continue with virtual learning.
There are currently 12 active COVID-19 outbreaks in Greater Sudbury, in places including long-term care homes, retirement homes, congregate living facilities, the local hospital and at local schools.
