Espanola council discussing removal of a councillor

Espanola council will be considering removing a councillor at the regular meeting this evening.

A motion will be tabled to have councillor Maureen Vanalstine removed from council following findings by the Integrity Commissioner on several breaches of the Municipal Code and a violation of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.

Several other reasons are also stated in the motion including that legal costs incurred so far have exceeded Vanalstine’s four-year remuneration as a councillor.

The motion calls her resignation effective tomorrow, and if she chooses not to resign, that she be removed from all boards and committees and only be allowed to attend council meetings once in-person meetings resume for the remainder of the term of council.
