Feasibility study released for new arts hub in Elliot Lake

Friday’s inaugural Zoom meeting of the Elliot Lake Arts and Culture Hub Steering Committee focused on the feasibility study carried out by Brook/McIlroy Architects.

Callum Brook’s team released the results of the study which focuses on the site of the former Elliot Lake Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre on Highway 108.

The centre was torn down last year following a roof collapse nearly two years ago.

Brooks’s study states the Arts Hub would be 25,000 square feet and could be built as one or two-storeys at an estimated cost of just over $12-million dollars.

The city has $3.50-million in reserve funds to be applied as start-up funding.

City CAO Daniel Gagnon says the city will look at other grants for the new build to house a museum, 400-seat theatre auditorium, art studios, a gallery, and offices.

He also noted the study and terms of reference for the new committee will be discussed at tonight’s council meeting.
