Town of Espanola passes interim tax collection bylaw

Even with a pandemic and the ensuing lockdown, town business continues and collecting taxes is part of that.

Espanola council passed a motion this week for an interim tax collection bylaw while the members continue finalizing the municipal budget.

The bylaw allows for the collecting of taxes for the first six months of this year, but there will be no penalties or late fees.

Deputy Mayor Bill Foster says the policy was put in place during the lockdown in 2020 and helps alleviate some of the pressures on ratepayers.

Ratepayers are still expected to pay their taxes and if they face challenges to contact the town office to discuss their situation.
