Two Sudbury long-term care facilities cancel PPE fees

Two NDP MPPs from the Sudbury area led a push against the owners of two long-term facilities in the city that were planning to implement a fee this March.

Gelinas says back in December they received many calls from residents of The Walford and The Lasalle retirement homes in Greater Sudbury in early December complaining about an increase of $106 per month for what was being called an “Enhanced Health and Safety Protection fee”, which was to be implemented in March.

However, following pressure from their offices, residents and family members, the company, Oxford Living Corporation, notified Gelinas and West on Tuesday that the fee increase has been cancelled.

“Obviously our elderly loved ones deserve better supports and protections during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these seniors are on a fixed income and cannot afford to boost an already profitable company’s bottom line under the guise of an ‘Enhanced Health and Safety Protection fee,’” addsWest.
