United Manitoulin Islands Transit is teaming up with Blaise Transit to pilot an on-demand passenger bus service on Manitoulin Island.
Johanna Berti, the executive director of United Manitoulin Islands Transit says the partnership will including implementing Blaise Transit’s rideshare software on their vehicles, which will provide on-demand passenger bus service.
She says the pilot project includes services between South Bay, Wiikwemkoong, Manitowaning and other communities on Manitoulin Island.
Berti says the service now makes two runs a day across the northern and central areas of Manitoulin, so the addition of the on-demand service will blanket the Island.
She points out they are currently funded through a grant but will be seeking other funding sources to ensure the service remains in place for a long time.
