Council approves working agreement between leisure services and Lions Club

With COVID-19 and limitations on how many people can access recreational services in Espanola, council has given its approval for a local service club to put in ice at the track and field oval.

The Espanola Lions Club approached Leisure Services to ask to enter into an agreement for assistance in the initial flooding and then club volunteers would maintain it throughout the skating season

Mayor Jill Beer says COVID-19 protocols must be in place and she wants to see supervision in place.

Leisure Services Manager Joel Yusko says maintenance will not be an issue with the Lions volunteers maintaining the surface once the town carries out the initial flooding using the nearby hydrants.

He adds the Lions have a tractor which they can use with the spray bar behind it to ensure good ice quality.

With council’s approval the ice can be put in at the oval adjacent to the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex once there are ideal winter conditions to do so.
