Wiikwemkoong turned down for new nursing home

With an aging facility and no funding coming in, a letter-writing campaign is underway in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory to try and get the provincial government to support a new building.

Resident Crystal Shawanda says the Wikwemikong Nursing Home was recently turned down for financial assistance to help in building a new facility.

She says the current building will be deemed unsafe within the next five years, and that would not only displace residents but also mean the loss of jobs.

Shawanda adds the facility does not just serve the indigenous community but also accepts residents from all over Ontario.

She says fundraising is underway, but time is of the essence since it will take up to two years to build a new facility.

In a move to gain government support, Shawanda says a letter-writing campaign to Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliot is now underway.
