Advisory extended on cross-border travel into Chippewa County, Michigan

On the heels of the federal government extending the border closure with the United States, the Algoma Health Unit has issued an advisory for those who regularly cross the border.

Unit communications spokesperson Leonardo Vecchio says the agency realizes there are people who need to cross the border for work and are exempt from restrictions but are asking them to avoid travel and use virtual options if possible.

He adds while people are in Chippewa County in Michigan to avoid crowded spaces and maintain physical distancing as there are now over 200 active cases of COVID-19 in the county.

Vecchio adds once back in Algoma, people are asked to self-isolate as best they can for at least 14 days.

He adds the advisory will now go into effect for 28 days until December 30th at which point an update will be provided based on the virus activity at that time.
