Whitefish River First Nation rejects governance agreement

A proposed governance agreement is not being welcomed with open arms in all First Nation communities.

Whitefish River First Nation, which held its ratification vote last week, is the latest First Nation to reject the proposed Anishnabek Nation Governance Agreement.

Ratification voting is underway in member communities of the Anishnabek Nation, which had been originally set to take place last Spring but had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

The agreement outlines proposals relating to terms of office, how elections are held within communities and other aspects of governance.

Anishnabek Nation, which is overseeing the process, is expected to have the overall results from the 14 member First Nations as soon as another round of voting is completed in February 2021.
