Officer, civilian dead after shooting on Manitoulin Island; SIU investigating

Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit is investigating a shooting on Manitoulin Island that resulted in the death of both a police officer and civilian.

Shortly after noon today, OPP were contacted about an unwanted man on a property in Gore Bay.

Soon after arriving an altercation ensued and one officer sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The man, who was also shot, was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators are en route to the scene.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique tweeted that the dead officer is Constable Marc Hovingh, a 28 year veteran of the OPP.

OPP is asking the public to stay away from the area in Gore Bay at this time.
