Another positive case in Algoma District, a look at the numbers and more …

Algoma District Case #35

The Algoma District has another case of COVID-19 to report.

Public Health Algoma says the case is a result of close contact on a recent international flight.

The agency adds the exposure is evidence of community spread in northern Michigan.

The health unit adds Case #35 is in self-isolation.

A look at the numbers

Ontario health officials are reporting another jump in the number of COVID-19 cases, with 615 new diagnoses added yesterday.

Almost half the new infections were reported in Toronto.

About 58 percent were reported in people under the age of 40, and that’s concerning health experts.

They say there’s now a spill-over of new infections into older age groups, who are more vulnerable to the effects of the virus.

Funding teachers in hard-hit areas

The provincial government is providing an extra 35-million dollars to school boards in regions hard-hit by the coronavirus.

The funding will allow them to hire more teachers, as they cope with rising numbers of students who are now learning from home.

The money will be split proportionally between school boards in Toronto, Peel Region, York Region, and Ottawa……where the majority of new COVID-19 cases are being reported.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce says, with flu season arriving, the government is ready to strengthen school safety in hard-hit areas.

Trudeau – stay the course

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says we’re going in the wrong direction, as the number of new COVID-19 cases continues to surge.

Trudeau says despite all the preparations that governments can make, it all comes down to the individual actions of Canadians if the spread of the coronavirus is to be brought under control.

He notes that the infection rates were brought down in the spring, and the same can happen this fall, if Canadians practice proper hand hygiene, wear face masks, and maintain physical distancing.

Trump returns to White House

U-S President Donald Trump is back in the White House, after spending more than three days in hospital being treated for COVID-19.

Trump says he’s feeling much better and will be back on the campaign trail soon.

That includes the next debate with Democratic challenger Joe Biden on October 15th.

His doctors say the president isn’t out of the woods yet, but can now be monitored at the White House.

In a social media video after his return, Trump says Americans shouldn’t be “afraid” of the coronavirus, citing his ongoing recovery as evidence.

Several White House staff members close to him have tested positive for the virus.

More than 210-thousand Americans have died of COVID-19, about 20 percent of the global total.
