SIU investigation – charges not warranted in relation to man’s arrest in Espanola

A Manitoulin OPP officer will not be charged in connection to an injury to a man’s eye during an arrest.

The Special Investigation Unit released its report stating that on February 23rd of this year, a 25-year-old man suffered a devastating eye injury during his arrest by OPP officers in Espanola.

According to the report, one of the police officers used a Taser and the probe struck the man around his left eye.

The man was taken to hospital in Espanola and then transferred to Health Sciences North in Sudbury where it was determined that the probe had struck the man in one of his eyes and may have punctured the eyeball.

The SIU was called in the next day.

After reviewing the evidence, Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an OPP officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest.
