Two confirmed COVID-19 cases in Sudbury

The City of Greater Sudbury has two more cases of COVID-19.

In the release, Public Health Sudbury & Districts say the two cases are in self-isolation.

It further states one case is attributed to travel, the other to community spread.

With these latest cases, there are 104 confirmed in the Sudbury District, of which 101 have been resolved and two deaths.

A look at the numbers

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ontario continues to surge, with 491 diagnoses reported yesterday.

That’s the highest number since May 2nd.

Two-thirds were in people under the age of 40.

There are now almost 42-hundred active cases in the province, with 112 people being treated in hospital, 28 of them in intensive care.

Those numbers are expected to rise since 35 hospitals didn’t report their latest data yesterday.

Restrictions were tightened again on Friday when Premier Doug Ford ordered that bars and restaurants be closed by midnight.

CERB transfer

The federal government is promising that the majority of people still receiving the Canada Emergency Response Benefit will be transferred to the Employment Insurance system.

The program, which paid 500 dollars a week to those who’ve lost their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic, officially ended yesterday.

Those who received the benefit through Service Canada will be shifted over automatically.

Those who applied through the Canada Revenue Agency will have to make an E-I application if they still qualify.

The first payments are expected by mid-October.

Benefits are also being expanded to cover the self-employed, those who fall ill with COVID-19 or must self-isolate, and those who can’t work because they’re caring for a family member, or for a child whose school or daycare is closed due to a coronavirus outbreak.
