School board drops plan to consolidate schools

The Huron Superior English Catholic School Board will not be melding two of their elementary schools.

Originally, the board had announced plans to consolidate Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Fatima schools in Elliot Lake with additional space at George Vanier to house the students.

Those plans had been announced back in 2018.

However, Huron education director Rose Burton-Spohn says the board voted Wednesday evening to scrap plans to consolidate the two and will look at doing repairs and remedial work to Our Lady of Fatima.

She says back in May of 2018, the board had agreed in principle to consolidate both schools since Fatima was well under capacity with 116 students while Lourdes was almost at capacity with 218 students.

However, those numbers have adjusted to around 175 each, she adds.

She adds it is estimated that about $5 million will be needed for upgrades to outdoor parking, bus and play areas, lighting, heating, and ventilation systems, and updating the kindergarten area.
