Manitoulin Health Centre receives generous donation

A long-time established company has provided a generous donation to the Manitoulin Health Centre in Mindemoya to kick off a campaign for renovations to the emergency department.

Jeff Smith was on hand for the presentation representing the Smith Family Foundation, the family that owns Manitoulin Transport.

He turned over a cheque for $1-milllion to the project leaders to kick off the campaign to raise some $2.5-million.

The total cost of all the renovations is estimated at around $5-million and will include several new amenities including infectious disease and larger chemotherapy suites, an extra bed in trauma, and a dedicated mental health observation suite.

The Mindemoya site dates back to the early 1930s when it served as a Red Cross outpost. In 1982, it merged with the hospital located in Little Current.

“Let’s Emerg Together” is the campaign slogan chosen to champion the Mindemoya site emergency department renovation and expansion capital campaign project. The emergency department at this site needs to be renovated and expanded, as it strives to meet its mission of, “contributing to the health and well-being of all who come to us in need.”

Angela Becks, the fundraising committee chair for MHC said, “Please know your gift is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated. The board of directors and management at MHC will honour this gift with wise and careful consultations in the building process. Your gift will shine as an example of giving to the community.”

Smith adds, “MHC needs support from friends on and off the Island. As an Island-based business, this gift demonstrates our continued commitment to the Island and our local health care centre. Our donation kicks off this fundraising campaign and encourages others to give toward the $2.5 million target.”

The Smith family started Manitoulin Transport, a worldwide trucking company over 60 years ago, with its head office based in Gore Bay.

MHC, the board of directors and the fundraising committee say thank you to the Smith Family Foundation for their continued interest and investment in the health of our community.
