Renaming streets on the agenda for the next Elliot Lake council meeting

Elliot Lake council will be discussing renaming streets in the city at its next meeting.

Councillor Ed Pearce asked for the item to be put on the next meeting’s agenda at this week’s meeting.

He is suggesting a new city committee be formed to take an in-depth look at City of Elliot Lake street names with the idea of coming up with suggestions for renaming some.

Pearce told fellow councillors he feels there needs to more recognition of individuals or institutions deemed historically significant to the community.

He cites Highway 108 as a good example, which could be renamed something more appropriate to recognize that it is the main gateway into the city.

He suggests some members of council and the CAO be on the committee, as well as two citizens of the city.

Council accepted the report and a motion will betabled at the next meeting in August to discuss the proposal.
