Elliot Lake council accepts tender for Pine & Poplar road improvement project

Elliot Lake council is moving ahead with a major road improvement project in the north end of the city, part of the 10-year asset management plan.
Public Works Director Darryl Halloch says council accepted the lowest of five bids, just over $3.4-million dollars from the Blind River-based company, Leroy Construction for the Pine & Poplar road improvement project.
Halloch explained to the council at last night’s meeting the work includes replacement of the asphalt road, removal of hydro poles and replacing the ageing underground infrastructure including storm and sanitary sewers and the water main.
Council also approved a contingency fund of $300,000 to come out of the water/waste reserve fund.
Halloch says the bid process had begun before the COVID-19 pandemic struck and froze the project.
Now with Stage Three underway, council approved the project with the preparation work begin in August.
Halloch adds the pandemic delay means most of the project will not be completed until next year.
