Island-wide fire ban in place on Manitoulin

No open fires are being allowed in any Manitoulin Island municipalities.

Billings Township Fire Deputy Captain, Martin Connell says an island-wide fire ban is in place in all the municipalities, which make up the membership of the Manitoulin Fire Association.

He says the hot, dry conditions have led to the ban.

Connell points out he is not aware of First Nations directives but says the public can call band offices or individual municipalities to find out more since each community is responsible for its fire bans.

Meanwhile, all three districts, Algoma, Manitoulin and Sudbury, are still under a heat warning for another few days.

Health units stress with the record high humidex levels, which have been consistently in the mid-30 range, to stay hydrated, use sunscreen and stay in cooler conditions if possible, especially those with chronic conditions.
