Manitoulin OPP Canada day stats show speeding a big concern

Over half of Manitoulin OPP’s nine-day Canada Day initiative charges involved speeding.

OPP Constable Wendy Forcier says there were 218 charges laid, 137 for speeding, with five impaired charges, two for distracted driving and two stunt driving charges.

She says the OPP also focused on personal safety equipment including lifejackets, helmets and bikes.

Forcier says the OPP wants everyone to have a safe summer, so slow down, follow the rules of the road and on the water and use the right equipment to ensure their safety.

OPP officers were busy keeping communities, highways, waterways and trails safe while focusing on the “Big Four” offences which include: impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and lack of occupant restraint.

During the 2020 Canada Day initiative, Manitoulin OPP officers laid the following charges over the 9-day period from June 27 th to July 5 th:

  • Impaired Driving Drug/Alcohol = 5
  • Other Criminal Code Driving = 7
  • Speeding = 137
  • Stunt Driving = 2
  • Seatbelt = 12
  • Distracted Driving = 2
  • Hazardous Moving Violations = 4
  • Other Highway Traffic Act = 3
  • Other Provincial Statutes = 41
  • Off-Road Vehicle Other Provincial Statutes = 2
  • Bicycle Helmet = 1

Forcier adds despite educational and enforcement efforts, fatalities and injuries continue to occur. She adds stay safe on the road and the water, so you can reach your destination safely.
