Do not feed wild animals – new bylaw in the works

Feeding pigeons and squirrels are becoming a problem in Espanola, so the council has given the staff the go
ahead to put together a draft bylaw allowing the bylaw officer to charge people who feed animals
illegally.
Councillor Heather Malott tabled the motion at Tuesday night’s Zoom meeting because of a situation
she was made aware of through phone calls.
She says the complaints involve a property on Tudhope Street where pigeons and squirrels have become
a problem for neighbours.
Malott says she did go out and observe the property and feels something has to be done right away.
Council went in camera to discuss the matter so as not to identify the individuals or property
involved.
It was noted there is no bylaw in regards to feeding wild animals, but many other communities have
such bylaws in place.
The draft bylaw is expected to be ready for the council next month.
