M’Chigeeng FN remove checkpoints

As part of the protocols to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island set up checkpoints and imposed strict health precautions, but the checkpoints have now been removed.
Chief and council state in a release that they have re-opened access through the checkpoints, but are still maintaining health standards.
They also emphasize that they want the 700 or so seasonal residents to stay home.
The release states they don’t have a registry of any buckshee lease agreements so they have no means of knowing who’s who.
A buckshee lease is a term used for a lease entered into between a member of an Indian Band or the Band itself and an individual, First Nations or not where the lease has not received formal approval in accordance with the Indian Act.
They are quite commonly seen in informal leasing arrangements such as campgrounds, recreation properties and primary residences.
The review is underway and an update is expected sometime today.
