Peaceful protests in Elliot Lake and Espanola

The City of Elliot Lake will be the scene of a peaceful protest in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

One of the organizers, Melissa Hodder, says it is being held to acknowledge the death of George Floyd, who was black, in Minneapolis just over a week ago.

Police Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck while he pleaded for air and has subsequently been charged with second-degree murder.

Hodder says in light of COVID-19 protocols, they plan to host a vehicular parade rather than a march.

She is asking anyone who wishes to attend to meet at the lower plaza near Rexall at 6:00 pm tomorrow.

She adds there will be speakers followed by the vehicular protest.

Meanwhile, Black Lives Matter supporters in Espanola will rally in front of town hall this afternoon at 1:00 followed by a march through town at 6:00 pm.
