Elliot Lake officers cleared in suicide investigation

The Special Investigations Unit has cleared two East Algoma OPP officers in connection with an April 20th shooting incident in Elliot Lake.

Joseph Marino, the director of the SIU, says a 49-year-old man is responsible for his own death following the incident at the Elliot Lake Parole Office.

Marino says the man came to the office for a scheduled meeting and a few minutes later the two officers arrived to arrest him on a breach of a probation order.

Marino says witnesses heard the man yell at the officers not to come in the room and then shot himself with a firearm he had tucked in his waistband.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Marino stresses there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any police committed a criminal offence in connection with the complainant’s self-inflicted death.
