Quite a few people gathered in front of the Espanola Town Hall Thursday morning. They were on hand to raise a flag commemorating World Autism Day. Espanola has been working hard to raise awareness about autism. Thursday’s flag-raising centred on the theme that people with autism have an advantage over others when it comes to some jobs. That’s because they have heightened abilities and pay more attention to detail. Figures show that 80 percent of people who are autistic are jobless. A major reason why they can’t get work is because of discrimination and not enough support systems in place to train autistic people for various jobs.
