Espanola landfill to open in a couple of weeks

The Espanola landfill has been closed for a while and that has upset local residents, but the owner says they are looking at reopening soon.
Ernest Dodge says the landfill has only been opened to essential waste since he closed it on March 21st, but he is working on plans to reopen within the next couple of weeks.

He adds he knows some residents are upset with the closure and sympathizes with them wanting to finish up their spring cleaning, but he also asks for patience.
Dodge explains that he has had to take those steps to protect his waste management workers from exposure to biomedical and other forms of waste they deal with while also meeting COVID-19 protocols.

He says he has been working with staff and consultants on the best way to move forward for the reopening.

Dodge adds in recent weeks he has also heard the complaints about illegal dumping but points out people will do that whether he is open or not, so the public should report any such activities to the bylaw officer or police.
