New housing unit in the works for Elliot Lake

The City of Elliot Lake is facing a long-term housing shortage and to ease that, Elliot Lake Retirement Living will work with the city to develop a new multi-residential housing development west of Spine Beach.

City CAO Daniel Gagnon says the council has given its unanimous consent for the construction of the 90-unit development on 162 hectares of land owned by Retirement Living.

He says the council has also agreed to fund the necessary pre-development costs for the city through the 2021 budget and that the next step is to put together a feasibility study.

He adds the new housing unit could generate thousands of dollars in tax revenue for the city while also meeting rising housing needs.

Gagnon says construction could begin in 2021.

Next Monday night May 4, another Elliot Lake virtual COVID-19 Town Hall information meeting will be televised on Eastlink cable and live-streamed from city hall, at 7:00 pm.
