Strategy created to fight postpartum mood disorder in Northern Ontario

A three prong strategy is now in place across Northern Ontario to fight post partum mood disorder.  Spokeswoman Jen Gordon says one of the priorities is to secure funding for consistent services across the north.  Gordon says right now what’s in play is what’s known as the postal code lottery where money is allocated depending on where you live.   She says some families just happen to live in the right place where funding is allocated or someone has taken up the local cause for funding.   Post partum mood disorder affects mostly women before or after birth but it also affects.  It’s a mental disease that can cause depression and anxiety but is treatable.  Figures show one in five mothers are affected, one in 10 fathers and one out of every two teen mums are also struck by the disease.  The other components of the three-part strategy are increasing public awareness and turning the mental disease into a priority.
