Prince Township eliminates "Reeve" designation

A municipality just east of Sault Ste. Marie is no longer in the minority on what to call its head of council.  Prince Township was one of the few remaining Ontario communities to still call its top elected official reeve instead of mayor.  Mayor Ken Lemming has tried to change the wording since 2011.  However, the first time he proposed changing the reeve’s designation, many residents opposed it because they mistakenly took it for a power grab.  This time there was no opposition.  Of Ontario’s 444 municipalities, 54 still refer to the head of council as reeve.
