Health Sciences North in Sudbury is not filling vacancies as a means to avoid layoffs at the hospital. The board wants to approve a $427-million budget. Right now there are 44 vacant positions in the registered nurses and registered practical nurses departments. The board says leaving these positions vacant means it doesn’t have to layoff nurses in the future. The hospital employs 3,900 people.
