Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella says there are many in the community who continue to disregard public health advice and provincial orders to stay home, so the city has declared a state of emergency.
He says the declaration is needed to reinforce measures the city and its health partners are taking to prepare and respond to COVID-19.
Marchisella says not only was the declaration passed this Saturday, a new social distancing bylaw has also been put in place, which could see individuals fined from $500 to $100,000 if they don’t follow the law.
He adds there are many who continue to disregard the directives to stay home and only travel for essentials, so the city is now taking a tougher stance on those who will not follow physical distancing guidelines.
He says the city is an information session this evening at 7:00 pm, which will be broadcast on Eastlink Cable 10 and also on the city’s live-stream on the municipal site.

Also, it is with public safety in mind that the City of Elliot Lake with Rio Algom Limited (RAL) and following the Province of Ontario and public health official directives, announce the following measures, implemented immediately and will remain until further notice.
Closure of Sherriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, associated trails and parking lot.
Closure of Quirke Lake Seniors Campground.
RAL sites are closed to the public. This includes public use of RAL private roads. Do not park along RAL roads or in front of RAL site access gates. Please obey all posted signage.
