First Nations across the North Shore corridor and on Manitoulin Island have now closed their doors to non-essential visitors due to the COVID-19 protocols.
Sagamok-Anishnawbek First Nation Chief Nelson Toulouse says his council passed the resolution this week to protect over 300 Elders and vulnerable members who live on the reserve.
He says only essential services and supplies will be allowed through the checkpoint that is being manned 24-7.
He stresses anyone wanting to access the community will have to verify their membership with their status card.
Other First Nations including all those on Manitoulin Island, as well as Mississauga and Serpent River, have set up similar checkpoints.
In the notice issued by the First Nation to its members, Sagamok-Anishnawbek says the decision was made to protect “the health and safety of the Sagamok community through this time of extraordinary circumstances are of paramount importance to the Sagamok-Anishnawbek Chief and Council,” citing particular concern for its Elders and other vulnerable populations for whom the COVID-19 virus can be particularly deadly.
The motion effectively restricts travel of individuals into the Sagamok community to Sagamok residents, critical and essential employees of the Sagamok-Anishnawbek organization and its community partners (inclusive of Nogdawindamin Family and Community Services, Niigaaniin Ontario Works, Anishinabek Police Services, and visiting health service professionals), Emergency Services personnel and delivery of essential supplies.
