Field hospital planned for Little Current

If required a field hospital to treat COVID-19 cases will be set up for Manitoulin Island.

The Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands and the Manitoulin Health Center have teamed up on a field hospital for possible cases.

In a joint statement Lynn Foster, the CEO of the Manitoulin Health Center and Mayor Al MacNevin has agreed to have a COVID-19 field hospital located in the NEMI Recreation Center in Little Current.

Foster says the field hospital will care for mild to moderately ill patients with COVID-19 requiring hospital admission, while the hospital will support critically ill COVID infected patients as well as non-infected patients.

MacNevin adds the field hospital has been initiated because the Regional Incident Command Centre has directed hospitals to prepare surge capacity plans inclusive of off-site field hospitals in response to the pandemic.

There have only been two confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the Island who are both in self-isolation.
