Sudbury mining company fined for unsafe working environments

A Sudbury area mining company is being fined almost $90, 000.

Two workers were at the Craig Mine this fall, when one got stuck. They were backfilling a stope, he was trying to get through a sand, cement, and water combination, and his feet got stuck.

There is a component in the cement that causes chemical burns when in contact with the skin, which is what happened to the miners, and the rescue team who came down for them. One required skin grafts.

F-N-X Mining knew their backfill procedure was dangerous, but they didn’t make any changes until after this incident.

The company pled guilty to two charges under health and safety regulations, and mining regulations.
