Teachers reach a deal – one union down, three more to go

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association has reached a tentative agreement with the provincial government, the first of the four major teachers’ unions to do so.

Details won’t be released until a ratification vote is held early next month, but all strike action has been put on hold by the union.

The teachers’ unions had been battling the Ford government’s proposals to increase class size, make high school students take some courses on-line, and reduce funding for special needs.

However, the government conceded last week that average class sizes will be lowered, and it made the on-line courses optional.

Negotiations continue with the Elementary Teachers Federation and the union representing French board teachers.
