13th Annual Elliot Lake Fish Derby another success

The 13th Annual Elliot Lake Fish Derby had plenty of action this weekend with hundreds of people taking part.

The big winner this year is Greg Simon of Simcoe, Ontario who won over $20,000 presented by Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella.

Marchisella adds the proceeds go back into tourism events and promotions for the region.

Simon won the derby’s grand prize of $21,250, which is half of the $100 registration fees collected, after catching a 71.8-centimetre (28.3 inches) northern pike.  Simon caught the winning fish about 30 minutes before the end of the derby, and he almost lost it twice, but managed to keep it hooked, added a friend.
In second place was an Elliot Lake man, Michel Charette. His catch was 31 cm long, and his prize was a CanAm Outlander ATV.
