Teacher union strikes escalating

Several local area schools will be canceling classes with more job action coming up by teachers’ unions.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is doubling up on one-day strikes in the Algoma, Manitoulin and Sudbury districts.

Nicole Charette with the Rainbow District School Board says classes will be canceled next Monday and Tuesday at elementary schools including AB Ellis in Espanola, S. Geiger in Massey, on Manitoulin Island and in the Sudbury area.

Fran Walsh with the Algoma District School Board says all their elementary schools in the Algoma District, including Elliot Lake and Blind River, will be closed next Tuesday and Wednesday.

She adds that also includes Rockhaven School, all Grade 7 and 8 programs in secondary schools and adult literacy programs.

There is no job action slated for either the French Public or French Catholic schools or at the secondary level.

Bargaining has broken off between the union and the provincial government with no new talks slated in the immediate future.

The main issues are wages, e-learning and class sizes.
