Research on hotel levy continues in Elliot Lake

Elliot Lake council has had some preliminary discussion into the possibility of imposing a hotel levy to increase local revenues, but any move forward is not likely to take place for a few months.

City CAO Dan Gagnon says staff is in the process of researching the issues surrounding the imposition of a 4% tax on local accommodation businesses.

He expects there will be a report to the economic development committee within a month or so before bringing brought back to the full council.

The Municipal Accommodation Tax was given provincial approval in 2017.

So far, more than 30 Ontario municipalities have put it into place for any accommodations where the renter is staying for less than 30 days, such as hotels, motels, and B&Bs.

Under the legislation, half of the funds go to the municipalities to fund local projects while the other half must go to fund local tourism initiatives.
